Asia Argento was born in Rome, Italy, into a family of actors and filmmakers, both of which she has pursued professionally. Asia Argento made her film debut at the age of nine in Sergio Citti’s Sogni e bisogni (1985). Asia Argento played the lead in Cristina Comencini’s debut film Zoo in 1988 and was a cast member of Michele Soavi’s 1989 film The Church. Asia Argento portrayed Nanni Moretti’s daughter in Red Wood Pigeon the following year (also directed by Moretti).

Asia’s career really took off with Close Friends (1992), written and directed by Michele Placido, and she was able to advance from portraying very young girls to more mature, complex roles. At the Cannes International Film Festival, the film received favorable reviews. Asia Argento collaborated for the first time with her father, renowned Italian horror director Dario Argento, on the 1993 film Trauma (her mother is Argento’s favourite actress, Daria Nicolodi), in which she played an anorexic girl on the hunt for the murderer of her parents. The Stendhal Syndrome (1995), Trauma (1993), and The Phantom of the Opera (1998) are the other two movies she and her father have produced (1996).
